— The Kabaru Story

Every Thread Has Roots.

Before it’s a garment, it’s a flour sack. A scrap of handwoven cloth. A memory, stitched back into fabric by Filipino hands. Kabaru Collections turns what others discard into pieces made to be worn — and remembered — for generations.

Founded by Janet Timbol Muñoz, Kabaru blends eco-conscious upcycling with time-honored Filipino craftsmanship — transforming katsa (flour sacks) and retaso (fabric scraps) into fashion with a story worth telling.

Brother Earth

The film above was made in partnership with Brother Earth — a shared belief that what we take from the planet, we owe back to it. Every Kabaru piece is our way of giving back one thread at a time.

— What We Stand For

The Three Pillars of Kabaru.

01 Sustainability

It starts with a flour sack that’s already done its job, or a scrap of cloth too small for anyone else’s pattern. Instead of asking what to do with it, Kabaru asks what it could still become. That question — repeated piece after piece, season after season — is the whole idea: less pulled from the earth, more pulled from what’s already here.

02 Livelihood and Community

None of this happens in a factory far away. It happens in Pampanga, in the hands of artisans who know exactly how a seam should sit and a weave should hold. Kabaru’s home base at Matuang Bale Café & Art Studio isn’t just an address — it’s a reminder that the people making these pieces are part of the same neighborhood the brand grew up in.

03 Heritage

The weaves and motifs Kabaru works with weren’t invented for a collection — they were passed down, borrowed carefully, and carried forward into something new to wear. Every piece is a small argument that Filipino craft doesn’t belong in the past tense; it belongs on people, today, still being lived in.
